Explore Johannesburg with Mashalas Travel

What first started as a gold-mining town, has evolved into a world-famous tourist-destination. Johannesburg is the capital city of Gauteng and is often referred to as the City of Gold. There are countless sights to see and things to do in and around “Jozi”. People from around the world arrive at O.R. Tambo International Airport near Johannesburg, and can’t wait to encounter the combination of a fast-paced city life with an African getaway.

As a professional tour operator, our goal is to offer a variety of tour packages at affordable prices. We aim to accommodate all our guests and provide day, as well as night tours in and around Johannesburg. The Mashalas Travel team is knowledgeable and passionate about what we do, therefore you can be sure that the tours you book with us will be exciting, informative and unforgettable.

Mashalas Travel will take you on a journey to a number of the most popular attractions.

When you book a Soweto half day tour, you will see the following: the South African Freedom Charter, Regina Mundi Church, Orlando Tower Jump, Vilakazi Street, Nelson Mandela House and Soccer City.

The South African Freedom Charter memorial is in Kliptown and expresses the ideologies of the South African Congress Alliance.

As you walk through Regina Mundi Church, you will not only see beautiful artefacts and stained windows, but also bullet marks. The church was damaged in 1976, only 12 years after it was built, when police fired shots toward protesting students in the building.

The Orlando Tower Jump is the highlight of Soweto tours, for everyone looking for an adrenaline rush. Adventure enthusiasts from across the globe flock to South Africa to tick this jump off their bucket list.

This is your chance to bungee jump from 100m above the earth between two cooling towers.

Vilakazi Street is a world-famous street in the Soweto Township, for many reasons. The Hector Pieterson Museum and memorial is in this street. The late Nelson Mandela used to live here and his residence has since become a museum (often referred to simply as “Nelson Mandela House”. Desmond Tutu still lives in Vilakazi Street with his wife.

Fun Fact: Both Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu have won Nobel Prizes.

The last stop of the Soweto half day tour is Soccer City. This is the local FNB Stadium and home to the Kaizer Chiefs Footbal Club.

There are quite a few stops included in the Johannesburg half day tour, namely: Fort prison, Constitutional Hill Court, Africa Museum, Calton Centre and Ghandi Square.

A tour to Constitutional Hill will give you a better idea of what life and the conditions at Fort Prison was like and you will see some British influences. Former President Paul Kruger built the first jail in Johannesburg, the Old Fort, in the late 1800’s. Nelson Mandela was held captive here for a part of his sentence. It also served as a military fort after the Jameson Raid. Today Constitutional Hill is a museum and South Africa’s Constitutional Court.

Tourists who have an interest in the various South African cultures and unique history of the country, will particularly enjoy a visit to Museum Africa. South Africa is known as “The Rainbow Nation” due to the many diverse cultures evident to this day. There are often exhibitions at the museum. Various fascinating and historical artefacts are on display, while the Bensusan Museum of Photography is on the top floor.

Carlton Centre is 50 story building with a height of 223 meters. It is the highest skyscraper in Africa.

Our last stop will be at Gandhi Square in the Central Business District of Johannesburg. Here you will be able to take a photo next to a statue of Mahatma Gandhi and learn some facts about this world-famous Indian activist.
