City sightseeing in Johannesburg is always a great holiday activity

We will show the most popular tourist attractions in Johannesburg to you.

Johannesburg tour packages are very popular and on a multi tour you can enjoy an excursion in the city of gold. In the central business district of Johannesburg, you will find Mahatma Gandhi Square. In the middle of the square stands a statue of Gandhi, a world-famous indian activist who faught for independence and regarded himself as a soldier of peace.

Nelson Mandela Bridge is the largest of its kind in southern Africa. It has been one of the many highlights on all Johannesburg day tours since 2003. The Nelson Mandela Bridge links Newtown and Braamfontein. At night it lights up in the colours of the rainbow, which is quite striking as South Africa is often referred to as “The Rainbow Nation”. Nelson Mandela Bridge, which is 284 metres long, honours the late Madiba and symbolises him uniting a divided country and bridging the gap caused by Apartheid.

On the tour we will make our way to Constitution Hill. The Johannesburg Prison was opened in 1893.  Three years later the government built the Old Fort around the prison after the Jameson Raid.  The Old Fort prison was overpopulated and new structures such as “Number Four” were built to house more prisoners. Later a women’s jail was also constructed on Constitution Hill. In 1964 the prison complex became a national monument and in 1983 it was closed. South Africa’s first constitutional court was built here and today people visit the site to see how our country became a democracy.

The Freedom Charter was signed at Kliptown on 26 June 1955. It was the beginning of a non-racial country where all citizens had the same rights. A tour guide will tell you about the people who attended and signed the Freedom Charter and what it meant for the nation.

If you enjoy sightseeing, visiting these iconic sights is one of the best things to do in Johannesburg.

Journey through the history of South Africa at the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg

1948 – 1994 was known as the Apartheid Era in South Africa. The citizens of the country were divided based on the colour of their skin. In 1994 Nelson Mandela was released from prison and became the first black president of South Africa.

If you want to get a better idea of what life was like for the different racial groups during that time, you should book a day tour to the Apartheid Museum at Northern Park Way and Gold Reef Rd in Johannesburg. This museum symbolises hope for a better future where all South African citizens are united, regardless of race. A tour guide will give you information about Apartheid and how the ruling party governed.

Our team enjoys showcasing the brilliance of our country, South Africa, to tourist from around the globe. Except for these fascinating Johannesburg tour packages, we also offer Kruger National Park safaris and tours to Sun City.

The Cradle of Humankind Tour

Less than an hour away from Johannesburg lies the cradle of humankind. Scientists believe that this is where the human race first came to existence millions of years ago. Mrs Ples was an Australopithecus africanus who walked this piece of earth between two and three million years ago. In 1947 Dr Robert Broom and John Robinson discovered the skull. Many other fossils such as “Little Foot” and the “Taung Child” have been found here.

The Cradle of Humankind is one of the eight world heritage sights in South Africa. It was declared as such in 1999. Before entering the Sterkfontein caves, you will walk through an exhibition which showcases earlier forms of life. Then there is a pathway leading to the caves. Along the pathway you will be educated a bit more on how humans lived millions of years ago. The Sterkfontein caves are limestone caves and there is an underground lake in it. When you walk through the cave, an experienced tour guide will show you where Little Foot and other fossils were found. There are also fossilised material to been seen in the walls of the caves. You can see some excavation sites outside the cave. Phillip Vallentine Tobias was a paleoanthropologist and lead the team who conducted research and discovered thousands of fossils in the area. To this day, the Sterkfontein caves are one of the areas in the world where the most hominids have been found. Hominids are the ancestors of us modern humans.

A tour to the Cradle of Humankind has many highlights other than the Sterkfontein caves:

The Maropeng Visitor Centre offers several interesting things to see and do for the whole family. Inside the Tumulus building you can read fascinating facts about the earth and how it has evolved. An underground boat ride will take you on a journey through the different ages it has seen, such as the ice age and to a time before that when everything was underwater. As the boat ride progresses you will be taken back in time to when the earth was formed. First there was just a black hole, then the “Big Bang” occurred and a ball of blazing melted rock was formed. Later it hardened on the outer surface.

The vortex tunnel is a short bridge with a cylinder rotating around it. The vortex represents a black hole and some people do feel disorientated and light-headed when they step inside.

The original fossil display changes on a regular basis. You can ask your guide about other displays and for more information about the items showcased during your excursion. There are also interactive and educational exhibitions in the visitor centre.
